How does counselling work?
A short phone call gives us a chance to meet, briefly discuss what brings you here and see whether my approach feels like a good fit.
This introduction is not a counselling session.
- 1
Understand where you are
What is currently difficult? When does it tend to show up? What have you already tried? What helps in the short term – and what may be getting in the way in the long term?
- 2
Recognise patterns
What happens in difficult moments? What thoughts show up? What do you feel? What do you want to avoid? What do you tend to do next?
Not: What's wrong with you? But: What's happening here – and is it helping you live the life you want to live?
- 3
Clarify what matters
ACT doesn't only ask what you want less of. It also asks: What do you want to move towards?
- 4
Experience ACT
Depending on the situation: cognitive defusion, mindfulness, acceptance, perspective shifts, values exercises, metaphors or behavioural experiments.
- 5
Choose a meaningful next step
What would you like to try before we speak again? No mandatory homework.
- 6
Reflect and adjust
What happened? What did you notice? What worked? Where did you get stuck? What can we learn from it?
