Does any of this sound familiar?

Most people don't arrive with a diagnosis. They arrive with a situation that feels stuck.

  • You keep turning the same thoughts over, especially in the evening.
  • You second-guess decisions long after you've made them.
  • You know what matters to you – but you don't get moving.
  • A change is coming up and you can't find a clear direction.
  • You say yes when you mean no, and resent it afterwards.
  • You want to learn a different way of handling difficult thoughts and feelings.

None of this has to be “bad enough”. It's enough that it occupies you.

In counselling

Not: getting rid of difficult thoughts. But: relating to them differently.

The obvious move is to get unpleasant thoughts and feelings under control – push them away, argue with them, grit your teeth. In the short term that often works. In the long run it costs a lot of energy and narrows everyday life.

I work in an ACT-based way: we don't start with getting rid of anything, we start with your room to act. That sounds unusual at first, and becomes very concrete within the first few sessions.

Create distance from thoughts

Notice a thought without immediately following it. “I'm not good enough” is a sentence your mind produces – not a fact you have to act on.

Make room for difficult feelings

Let tension, uncertainty or sadness be there without letting them run the whole day. That's something other than resignation.

Clarify what matters to you

Values aren't goals you tick off, they're a direction. We work out which one is currently getting too little room in your life.

Widen your room to act

Having several options instead of one automatic reaction – especially in the situations where you've always responded the same way.

Make decisions more deliberately

Less circling, more choosing on the basis of what counts for you. Including when no option feels clearly right.

Act even with uncertainty

The next step isn't waiting for the doubt to disappear. We look for one small enough that you'll actually take it.

In person

In person every Friday at my practice in Kreuzberg

My practice is at Audre-Lorde-Straße 37 in Berlin-Kreuzberg. This is where the one-to-one sessions take place on Fridays – quiet, undisturbed and with enough time.

For many people it makes a difference to have a place you go to for a conversation and leave again afterwards. Between the door and everyday life there's a short walk on which quite a bit tends to settle.
